Prayer for Repentance

by Wendy Boardman

Oh, Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe, God of my salvation, the heart of Your servant cries out to you because, progressively, Your church is turning away from You in favor of other gods.

During a recent program held in the worship center, my spirit was deeply disturbed as the lyrics of an ungodly nightclub dance tune, accompanied by it’s pounding beat, blared over the sound system.  Sadly, I observed adults and children move their bodies to the music, apparently oblivious to the subliminal message that was being transmitted, as they seemed to be captivated by what they were watching on the platform.

Lord, You have commanded us to reverence You and Your place of worship: “You shall keep My Sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:30), but we have chosen to irreverence You and prostitute Your place of worship.

How have we drifted so far from You that, in pride and arrogance, we have determined how we shall behave, as well as dictate what is pleasing to You, rather than what you have commanded?

You have told us: “whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8).“

What shall I tell my child, having attempted to instruct him in Your truth, when we witness and are being encouraged to participate in the contradictory and adulterous deeds of Your bride?

Our leadership has indicated that our adulterous actions are not discussible.  Nonetheless, our sin is against You and the leadership endeavors to further engage us in infidelity.

How can I remain silent when Your Spirit within me is indignant?

For Your Church, I pray the prayer of Nehemiah:

5 And I said: “I pray, Lord God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your commandments,

6 please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against You. Both my father’s house and I have sinned.

7 We have acted very corruptly against You, and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, nor the ordinances which You commanded Your servant Moses. (Nehemiah 1:5-7)

Lord, You have commanded us not to be partakers with the sons of disobedience.  Rather, we are to walk as children of light, examining what is acceptable to You.  You have said in Your Word:
6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),

10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:6-10)

In Your Word, You have commanded us not have fellowship with darkness, rather we are to separate ourselves from it because we are Your temple—the temple of the living God:
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?

15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?

16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

    “I will dwell in them

     And walk among them.

     I will be their God,

And they shall be My people.”

17 Therefore

     “Come out from among them

And be separate, says the Lord.

Do not touch what is unclean,

     And I will receive you.”

18 “I will be a Father to you,

And you shall be My sons and daughters,

     Says the Lord Almighty.”

71 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.  (2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1)

You chose us out of this world and have instructed us: “If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”  (John 15:18-19)

You do not require us to utilize ungodliness to attract the lost into Your Body.  Rather, You have commanded us to transport ourselves—to:

19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:19-20)

However, we have progressively embraced the wicked ways of the world in an attempt to appeal to the lost, inviting into Your church ungodly philosophies and practices, under the guise of utilizing new methods to reach the world.  We have been caught in the fowler’s snare and Your servants are committing fornication with the world by partaking in her ways.

My spirit is grieved and burdened for Your church, as she has been deceived and seduced to commit adultery with the world, that we have demonstrated a preference for pleasing the world’s appetite, rather than pleasing You.

Oh, Lord, how long will You strive with us?  Father, please hear my heart’s cry for Your guidance and my prayer for the repentance of Your church.  God of mercy, may we fall at the feet of Your grace and repent of our sin against you, Lord, Most Holy One, God of our salvation.
